Legally Blonde at the Playground Theatre | Review
By Chris Omaweng / August 22, 2024
Legally Blonde is arguably even more relevant in 2024 than it was when the Savoy Theatre production began previews in December 2009, in part thanks to the #MeToo Movement, which started in 2006 but only really took off in 2017. But there’s so much more to Legally Blonde than Elle Woods (at the performance I attended, Amelia Fadden, the role shared with Arwyn Vernold) confiding in teaching assistant Emmett Forrest (Ruairi Dickson) that “[Professor] Callahan (Matt Bacon) hit on me”.

It has been refreshed and brought up-to-date, to an extent – the pieces of paper that graced the 2009-2012 production at the Savoy Theatre have been replaced by mobile phones and instant messaging. But the diverse casting, unproblematic in itself, ironically highlights quite how ‘binary’ (that is, un-non-binary) the plotline remains. Still, it’s a joyous production with a palpable feel-good factor. I was humming the show’s melodies in my head on the Tube home: make of that what you will.

Finally – as I sit here listening to the original cast recording – my advice to everyone is to get yourself off to see Legally Blonde The Musical and for nearly three hours, forget Trump, Brexit and the World Cup and lose yourself in a first-rate musical that sends you back out into the world with a smile on your face and still humming “Omigod You Guys”.
