Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical - Alexandra Theatre Birmingham

Preview: Operation Mincemeat at The Alexandra, Birmingham

“Pure theatrical serotonin.” — Metro

The best-reviewed musical in West End history is officially marching into Birmingham. The Alexandra hosts the multi-award-winning Operation Mincemeat this May – a fast-paced, hilarious, and surprisingly moving retelling of the secret mission that changed the course of WWII.

What began as a tiny fringe production has become a global sensation. Described as “Part Mel Brooks, part SIX, part Hamilton,” this “comic masterpiece” (The Daily Mirror) tells the bizarre true story of a dead body, a fake briefcase, and a daring deception that outwitted Hitler.

Why It’s a Must-See

After fifteen extensions in the West End, the production launches its world tour, bringing its signature blend of high-energy choreography and razor-sharp lyrics to the Second City.

  • Exceptional Comedy: Critics have praised the show for being “so funny you can barely breathe,” blending historical facts with over-the-top humour and absurd wit.
  • Powerhouse Performances: The touring company is expected to maintain the “stunning vocal ability and cohesion” that made the London run a five-star triumph, featuring a small, versatile cast playing dozens of roles.
  • Cult Hit Pedigree: Written by the comedy troupe SpitLip and directed by Robert Hastie, this is the rare musical that caters to everyone—from history buffs to pop-culture fans.
  • Entering its third year in the West End and it’s fifteenth extension, the multiple award-winning hit from humble beginnings keeps demanding a crowd. Originally a commission at the New Diorama in 2019, what began life in a small venue has gradually taken the world by storm. Playing simultaneously in London and New York, the production will embark on a tour to China, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and the USA next year. No mean feat for a new musical. Note: “Believe the hype.” Whether you know the history or not, this is widely considered one of the most rewarding theatrical experiences in modern memory.
