In 1907, Sir Barry Jackson established the Pilgrim Players, an amateur theatre group that laid the foundation for the Birmingham Repertory Company. Recognizing the need for a dedicated performance space, Jackson commissioned architect S. N. Cooke to design the first purpose-built repertory theatre in the UK. Construction began in October 1912, and the Birmingham Repertory Theatre opened its doors on Station Street on February 15, 1913, with a production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.
